We began leading our school sessions this month, working in two ASN schools in Fife and Glasgow - collaborating with the young people to explore ideas of transformation, bodies, and the pain and joy of change. Across 14 sessions, we are questioning how audiences / participants can have more autonomy in what and how they hear music and can engage with artistic material. Specifically we are exploring vocal experimentation, stimming as a choreographic practice. and the ways in which costume / props and sound design can be a live and playful interactive process that influences what happens in the room.  This has been made possible by Creative Scotland’s Youth Arts Open Fund.

These sessions will directly inform the making of DUSSSKK, which will be developed over the next year, and premiere in 2025, partly funded by the Jerwood New Work Fund.

We have been in residency in the studio at The Tramway this month, continuing with our development of Crash//Catapult//Float. As part of our time in the studio, we held a invigorating two day workshop for dancers and non-dancers exploring Viewpoints technique. This follows on from recent training Eszter has been doing with the Mary Overlie Foundation in New York.

We will be co-hosting an event called A New Sound for artists in the field of opera, music theatre, and music driven performance, in collaboration with Mahogany Opera and Edinburgh Futures Institute. A New Sound will be a day of creativity and connection for artists making work in Scotland, and will be held on the 20th February 2024 at The University of Edinburgh. Join us for a day of creative discussion with other makers of multi-disciplinary and music driven performance to identify how we overcome barriers and envision a future together.

Tickets are free and can be booked here. There are a number of bursaries available for childcare and travel costs. Please email Bridget bridget@mahoganyopera.co.uk for more information. Support will be allocated on a first come first serve basis, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you wish to apply!
